Godrej Properties Partners with 'I Am Gurgaon' NGO to Revive Chakkarpur–Wazirabad Bundh Urban Lake
Godrej Properties Launches Neighbourhood-Scale Ecological Restoration Platform
Godrej Properties announced the launch of 'Neighbours With Nature,' a long-term platform focused on hyperlocal ecological restoration and neighbourhood wellbeing, unveiled in April 2026. As the first chapter of this platform, GPL has collaborated with I Am Gurgaon to support the ongoing revival of the Chakkarpur–Wazirabad Bundh, a 5.2–km ecological corridor in the heart of the city.
From Drain to Forest Corridor
Once a neglected drain, the Bundh has been rejuvenated into a biodiverse, walkable, urban ecological corridor through the plantation of native trees and shrubs, the reuse of construction and demolition waste, the creation of pedestrian and cycling paths, solar-powered lighting, and interventions that strengthen rainwater recharge and groundwater systems.
Over 20 years of accumulated garbage was removed, including more than 200 truckloads of silt and plastic waste which were properly segregated and disposed of. The flow of sewage into the nullah was stopped and diverted into sewage treatment plants, and measures were put in place to prevent further dumping of waste. The project involved planting of 30,000 native trees and shrubs contributing to aesthetics, biodiversity, and groundwater replenishment.
A self-sustaining ecosystem that also operates as a carbon sink, the revived bundh has led to lower GHG emissions as it transformed people's mobility patterns from the use of vehicles to walking and cycling.
A Bundh System for Modern Gurugram
The project is aimed at reviving the bundh system of Gurgaon which was designed to harness rainwater, maintain the water table, and regulate water management systems for the city. The initiative has ensured the plantation of over 30000 native trees and shrubs on the Bundh, restoring the biodiversity of the area and attracting a diverse array of fauna to the region. Solar lights have been installed along the entire stretch, reducing dependence on non-renewable sources of energy and making the rejuvenated Bundh more eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable.
Dia Mirza and a Broader Message
UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador Dia Mirza joined the initiative to spotlight the importance of restoring ecological assets within cities. She was appointed as the United Nations Environment Goodwill Ambassador for India at the UNEA assembly held in Nairobi.
As a Goodwill Ambassador, Mirza works with the United Nations to further spread the message on priority areas including clean air, clean seas, wildlife protection and climate change. Her involvement underscores the Bundh's role not just as local green infrastructure, but as a model for urban ecological restoration across India's growing cities.
Godrej Miraya: Sustainability in Practice
Godrej Properties hosted a curated experience at Godrej Miraya, followed by a guided forest-bathing (Shinrin-yoku) walk at the restored Bundh corridor. Godrej Miraya has achieved IGBC Net Zero Waste Platinum Certification (Design Stage) and includes GPL's adoption and rejuvenation of a neighbouring creek — supporting biodiversity, natural drainage, and microclimate improvement, while integrating the development with the restored ecological landscape.
A Framework for Scaling Ecological Impact
Rooted in the Godrej Group's Good & Green philosophy, Neighbours With Nature will serve as a framework for ecological upliftment across GPL's future micro-markets, enabling greener public spaces, enhanced biodiversity pockets, environmental restoration, and community-led stewardship across India's urban neighbourhoods.
The initiative brings together the company's ongoing environmental efforts under a unified identity, designed to create visible, community–level ecological impact in the neighbourhoods surrounding its developments. The launch builds on GPL's sustained commitment to environmental responsibility, including the diversion of over 96,000 tonnes of waste from landfills in the last two years, facilitation of over 17 million litres of water recharge, and the planting of more than 4 lakh trees over the past five years.
Godrej Properties has 10+ active projects in Gurgaon — its most concentrated market in Delhi NCR. The Gurgaon portfolio spans every major investment corridor: Golf Course Road (Godrej Astra, Godrej Sora), Dwarka Expressway (Godrej Meridien), Sohna Road and SPR (Godrej Aria, Godrej Oasis), and New Gurgaon sectors (Godrej Zenith, Godrej Vrikshya, Godrej Summit, Godrej Icon). The Neighbours With Nature platform signals the developer's intent to embed ecological restoration within neighbourhood contexts wherever it operates.
